Gay Twins Aaron and Austin Rhodes Talk About Life Since Coming Out Video Went Viral

It’s been nearly a year since the emotional YouTube video of gay twins Aaron and Austin Rhodes coming out to their dad went viral.

They guested on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and landed recurring roles on the Fox series Scream Queens and their online fame is greater than ever.

‘It’s been a whirlwind,’ Aaron said during a recent chat the twins had with Gay Star News.

‘It’s definitely been an incredible experience. I remember when we first got to Hollywood and we first started this career, everyone was telling us to stay hush-hush about our sexuality. To come full circle and be in the industry and be working and be completely out and proud as a young person is really liberating and exciting for our future.’

Added Austin: ‘We were nervous about sharing our story but we finally did and we’ve impacted so many lives. Sometimes it just feels like a dream honestly. How is everything happened the way it has happened? But everything happens for a reason.’

The twins had already launched The Rhodes Bros YouTube channel and were doing modeling jobs when they decided to record their coming out to their dad – who lives in a different state – last January after having already told the rest of their family and planning to go public.

They nervously called their dad and Aaron began to tell him about a video that’s coming out but starts to cry. Austin took the phone briefly before Aaron got back on and was able to say: ‘Well, I don’t really know how to say how else to put it but I’m gay and Austin is too. We just wanted to tell you.’

Their dad seemed surprised but remained calm, thoughtful and reassuring: ‘You know I love you both – that will never change. You gotta live your lives. You gotta do what you gotta do.’

Since then, he has only become more supportive. He appeared with his sons on Ellen’s show and says Aaron: ‘He’s always like, “Who’s your boyfriend?’ Who are you seeing?”‘

Says Austin of their dad: ‘He spent like a week and a half out here this summer and we took him around all through West Hollywood, he was walking down the rainbow crosswalk enjoying himself (laughs). He’s really come a long way. I talk to him just about every day.’

In addition to resulting in a closer relationship with their father, their viral coming out video also got the attention of Ryan Murphy, creator of the TV hits Glee, American Horror Story and Scream Queens.

Murphy cast the twins as fraternity brothers named Roger and Dodger in six episodes of Scream Queens until their characters reached an unhappy ending.

‘Spoiler alert: We died,’ says Aaron. ‘It was fun. It was a great experience. It was our first time acting and it was good.’

He said he and Austin were in disbelief when Murphy reached out to them. ‘He was like, “Have you guys ever acted before?” We’re like, “No.” He’s like, “Well, do you want to be part of this project?’ We were like, “Yes!.”‘

Austin says the openly gay producer ‘was just very inspired by the fact that we actually did come out. In this industry, it’s hard and he wanted to make that statement and give us the opportunity. It was awesome and we’re thankful.’
