The Full Frontal host tries to understand how anyone — but especially minorities —could back the current Republican front-runner.
For a hilarious (and frustrating) segment on her TBS show, Full Frontal, Samantha Bee gathered a gaggle of Donald Trump diehards, probed them with questions, and then hosted an “unironic” party for them.
Bee prefaced the interview with clips of racist Trump supporters inciting violence at campaign rallies before introducing her group of supporters as “college-educated, bipartisan, multi-ethnic, and, look, no one was even escorting the gay black guy out!”
The African-American supporter, whose name was not revealed, described Trump’s message as “simple but evocative,” adding that his “moderation on various social issues” allows us to “concentrate on things that are actually valuable for improving the country at large.”
Bee then asked the gay black Trump fan about his candidate retweeting messages from white supremacists. “It’s clearly illogical to do this guilt-by-association thing because we can play it all day long,” he responded. Bee then pointed out that line of thinking conflicts with Trump’s plan to ban all Muslims from the U.S.
The minority Trump supporter later said Trump represents a pro-nationalist sentiment, one without racism. When Bee challenged him on that assertion, he argued that Trump speaks “in an old way.” Watch the exchange below.
